Three Basics of Online Marketing

With all that is written and produced about marketing over the Internet, it can sometimes be tough for business owners and managers who are new to the field not to be overwhelmed. Besides all strange terms and concepts, it’s an industry that thrives on acronyms and jargon like SEO, PPC, click through rate, and so on.

But at its heart, online marketing – like all forms of sales and marketing – is pretty simple. In fact, if you’re just getting started out, there are only three things you really need to know:

It’s all about what you can offer. The real key to making an online business plan work isn’t the sophisticated software you use, or how many books you read. What matters is that you can pick out something customers really want and give them a very compelling reason to buy from you instead of someone else. Figure that out, and you’re well on your way.

Profits matter more than any other indicator. It’s easy to become obsessed about the number of people visiting your website, where they’re coming from, how much time they’re spending on which pages, and so on. At the end of the day, however, what matters is whether your site is profitable or not, so keep your focus on the bottom line.

Constant testing and revision lead to success. No plan is perfect out of the gate, so make a habit of monitoring what’s going on and making small refinements. Then, once you have seen some slight increases in sales or profits, do the same thing all over again. Eventually, you’ll end up with a website that is doing better and better every month.

Internet Marketing Success

Online marketing isn’t as intimidating as it usually seems. Just keep your focus on your customers and the bottom line, and then keep improving – you’ll already have a jumpstart on many of your competitors, and you’ll figure out the rest in no time.
