Times have changed for the modern library. More people are now going online to find what they once looked for among their community’s bookshelves. Most people read books and articles right from their computers, tablets, and smartphones. But that doesn’t render libraries obscure. To the contrary, by adapting to Internet branding and technology, libraries can remain a rich and reliable community resource that informs and educates an even greater audience.
All around the country, libraries are continuing to serve as important places for research, study, and community organization. However, a lot of the great work that they do goes unnoticed because they may not have the right kind of website presence.
To make sure that yours stands out, and that constituents and community members know why they should stop by, here are four things that have to be found on your library website:
#1: Basic Library Information
In some communities, there are at least a few different libraries around. Make sure it’s easy to tell which one your website is for. Or, if your website is for several different libraries, include links to the various branches from your home page. You might also want to say something about the size of the library.
#2: Maps, Directions, and Hours
Residents and visitors can’t enjoy your library if they can’t find it. Including maps, driving directions, and hours is important, especially since many website visitors will be viewing your pages from smart phones while making their way to your library or branch.
#3: Upcoming Events
Most libraries have lots of special educational events. Make sure they are promoted via an online schedule that’s kept up-to-date. You might even want to start an email list, so community members can be reminded about upcoming events, displays, and speakers.
#4: Online Exhibits
Many libraries are increasing community interest (not to mention attracting donations) by hosting online exhibits. These can be unique photos and stories, or items from existing collections, either within your library or a nearby museum.
